Cinco Grandes Avenidas (Tianjin)

The Five Great Avenues are one of the most distinctive historic districts in Tianjin, a leafy residential area in the Heping district whose grid of streets is lined with several hundred early-twentieth-century European-style villas and apartment buildings. Named after five of the principal roads that cross the area, the district as a whole contains more than twenty streets and represents the largest and best-preserved concentration of foreign-style architecture from the era when Tianjin was home to a succession of international concession districts. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons, when the tree-lined avenues are at their best and the light flatters the varied facades. The district is at its quietest in the early morning, when the streets are almost empty and the villas are most photogenic.
