The Tengchong Volcanic Geology National Geopark is a protected landscape that preserves one of the most important volcanic regions in China, a cluster of around ninety-seven volcanic cones distributed across the highlands of western Yunnan. Created to showcase the deep geological story that underlies the region's hot springs, mountains, and fertile soil, the park has become the single best place in the area to understand how volcanic activity has shaped the landscape of Tengchong over millions of years. The park is divided into several non-contiguous sections that together tell the story of Tengchong's volcanic heritage. The most visited core is around the Dayun and Xiaoyun mountains in the Mazhan township, two adjacent cinder cones whose symmetrical shapes and accessible slopes make them popular viewpoints and walking destinations. A stone path and staircase climb to the rim of each crater, where panoramic views open out across the surrounding volcanic field to the mountains beyond. Other sections of the park protect the striking columnar jointing formations along the Hei Yu River, where basalt lava has cooled into vertical hexagonal pillars, and the volcanic wetlands and caves of the wider region.

Within the main visitor area, an excellent geological museum introduces the deep history of the region with maps, rock samples, mineral displays, and interpretive panels that explain how the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates have shaped the volcanoes, hot springs, and earthquakes of western Yunnan. Outdoor exhibits include large volcanic bombs, obsidian samples, and sections of basalt columns moved from natural outcrops for easier viewing. Many visitors arrive at the museum first, then set out for one of the crater climbs or for the columnar jointing area.

A full day is enough to combine the museum with one or two of the main volcanic features, while a more relaxed visit can be built around a single half-day walk to one of the cinder cones. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons, when the weather suits a long outdoor walk and the light is at its best for photography of the crater lakes and forested slopes. The park is easy to combine with a hot-spring excursion in the same day, since the same geology that created the volcanoes also heats the bathing resorts of the region.
