Ventana del Mundo

Window of the World is one of the two flagship theme parks of Shenzhen's Overseas Chinese Town (OCT) district and the most internationally minded of the city's major attractions. Opened in the early 1990s as one of the first generation of large-scale Chinese theme parks, the park compresses more than a hundred of the world's most famous landmarks into a compact site overlooking Shenzhen Bay.

The premise is unapologetically touristic: scaled-down replicas of world monuments, from the Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal to the Pyramids of Giza, the Colosseum, Angkor Wat, and Niagara Falls, are arranged along landscaped walkways. Some reproductions are miniatures, others are built at half or near full scale — the 108-metre reproduction of the Eiffel Tower is the park's vertical centrepiece and can be climbed for an elevated view of the grounds.

Live entertainment is the second pillar of the experience. International cultural shows are scheduled through the day, including Japanese tea-ceremony demonstrations, African music and dance performances, European folk dance, and larger evening stage shows on the central lake stage. Night-time illuminations and seasonal festivals add additional programming layers.

For international travellers, the appeal is not historical fidelity — the replicas are unambiguously tourist-grade — but the culturally fascinating exercise of walking through a Chinese-curated "world" assembled in the early years of the country's economic-reform era. Window of the World is in many ways a piece of contemporary Chinese popular culture rather than a substitute for actual travel.

The park is a short walk from Window of the World station on Line 1 of the Shenzhen Metro, which makes it one of the easiest major theme parks in the city to reach without a car. Pair it with the adjacent Splendid China Folk Village for a full-day tour of OCT's park cluster.
