Parque del yacimiento de las tumbas Han de Haihunhou

The Nanchang Han Dynasty Haihunhou State Archaeological Site Park preserves one of the most significant Han-dynasty archaeological discoveries made in China in recent decades. Located in the northern outskirts of Nanchang, the park protects the remains of the capital city of the Haihun marquisate — a small vassal state established under the Han emperor system — together with the cemetery of Liu He, the first Marquis of Haihun and a briefly reigning Han emperor who was deposed and demoted to marquis. Ongoing excavations since 2011 have uncovered the layout of the marquisate's capital at Zijin City, the surrounding tomb clusters, and the remarkably intact marquis tomb itself.

What makes the site exceptional is the quantity and quality of the artifacts recovered from Liu He's tomb. Archaeologists have excavated tens of thousands of objects, including gold items numbering in the hundreds, bronze vessels, jade ornaments, lacquerware, bamboo slips, and wooden tablets bearing inscriptions. Among the most discussed finds are a mirror bearing an image associated with Confucius, gilded chime bells, and a quantity of gold that far exceeds what was typical for a marquis-rank tomb, offering scholars a rare, well-preserved window into the material culture and political rituals of the Western Han period.

The park presents these finds across both an outdoor archaeological zone, where visitors can walk among the excavated tomb sites and view the protective structures built over them, and an on-site museum displaying the most significant artifacts. For travelers interested in early Chinese history, the site offers something genuinely rare: a Han-dynasty burial complex whose treasures were largely undisturbed by tomb robbers and whose interpretation is still actively unfolding as research continues. It is best treated as a half-day visit and pairs naturally with the separate Haihunhou Site Museum for visitors wanting a fuller picture of the discovery.
