The Sui-Tang Luoyang Yingtian Gate Site marks the location of the grand southern gate that once formed the ceremonial entrance to the imperial palace city during the Sui and Tang dynasties, when Luoyang served as one of the great capitals of Chinese civilization. Yingtian Gate held major symbolic importance in its day, serving as the setting for imperial ceremonies and ranking among the most important architectural landmarks of the palace complex.
Today the site has been developed into a heritage attraction combining the excavated foundations of the original gate with a reconstructed gate tower structure built above and around the ruins, allowing visitors to appreciate both the archaeological remains and a sense of the gate's original grandeur. Exhibits at the site typically provide context on the layout of the Sui-Tang imperial city and the role Yingtian Gate played within it, helping visitors picture how this part of Luoyang looked and functioned at the height of the Tang dynasty. In the evenings, the gate structure is often illuminated, creating a striking nighttime silhouette that has become a popular photo spot.
A visit generally takes one to two hours, and the site works well both during the day, when the archaeological elements are easier to study, and after dark, when the lit-up gate creates a different, more atmospheric impression. Yingtianmen was the main south gate of Ziwei, the palace city of Sui-Tang Luoyang, first built in the Sui Daye era and a place of high standing where emperors held grand state rites — enthronements, reign-changes, amnesties and audiences with foreign envoys. As the core of the capital under the Sui, Tang and Wu Zhou, Sui-Tang Luoyang was grandly planned; with its twin towers, triple gateways and lofty gate-house, Yingtianmen symbolized the splendor of the Tang capital. Today's gate is built over the original foundations, its reconstructed architecture restoring the outline of those monumental towers and evoking the glory of Luoyang as the 'Divine Capital'.
Visita: After dark, Yingtianmen is often lit so its towers glow with soaring eaves and shifting light, at its most Tang-like; visitors can climb the gate-house and look down the central axis at the layout of the palace ruins, picturing — amid the lights and rammed earth — the great rites of reign-change and the homage of distant lands. It is a fine place to feel the spirit of the Sui-Tang 'Divine Capital'.
