Sobre Bosque de Piedra (Shilin)

The Stone Forest Scenic Area, located in Shilin county roughly ninety kilometers southeast of central Kunming, is one of the most spectacular karst landscapes in China and the single most famous natural attraction in the Yunnan region. Recognized as part of a UNESCO World Heritage serial listing for the South China Karst, the site preserves a vast expanse of limestone formations eroded over hundreds of millions of years into dense pinnacles, towers, arches, and pavilions that rise from the ground like a petrified forest, giving the park its name.

The formations come in a striking variety of shapes — sword-like, pagoda-shaped, mushroom-capped, and tower-like — and many have been given names drawn from animals, mythological figures, or local Sani folklore, turning a walk through the forest into a kind of interpretive scavenger hunt. The best-known individual formation, the Ashima stone, takes the shape of a beautiful Sani girl and is tied to a famous epic poem of the local Yi people, whose culture pervades the park's interpretation. Paths wind between the pinnacles, climb over natural bridges, and pass through small caves and underground pools, with the tallest and densest clusters concentrated in the Greater and Lesser Stone Forest sections at the core of the park.

For foreign visitors, the Stone Forest is the single most important day trip from Kunming and one of the signature natural sights of southwest China. A full visit occupies most of a day including the drive each way, and the park rewards travelers who take the time to wander away from the most crowded central formations, where the maze-like gaps between the pinnacles open out into quieter, less-visited chambers. Sani Yi cultural performances, craft stalls, and food vendors clustered near the entrance give the visit an additional ethnic-cultural dimension. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather, while summer brings lush vegetation and occasional rain. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, since the paths between the pinnacles are uneven and the routes through the densest formations involve some scrambling.
