Valle de Jiuzhaigou

Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the mountains of northern Sichuan, and one of the most celebrated natural landscapes in all of China. Set within the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture on the edge of the Tibetan plateau, it takes its name from the nine Tibetan villages that have long stood within the valley, and it is renowned for its snow-capped peaks, dense forests, thundering waterfalls, and above all for its extraordinary lakes, whose crystalline waters shift through shades of turquoise, emerald, sapphire, and gold. The water is the great wonder of Jiuzhaigou: the lakes, known in Chinese as "haizi" or "seas," are filled with water so clear that submerged trees, fallen logs, and colorful mineral deposits are visible on the bottom, and the dissolved calcium carbonate in the water gives them their famous, ever-shifting colors, which change with the depth, the light, and the season. Tiered waterfalls link the lakes in a chain of cascades, of which the broad, curtain-like Nuorilang and the dramatic Pearl Shoal are the most famous.

The cultural landscape is just as distinctive as the natural one. Tibetan and Qiang villages, prayer flags, wooden houses, and the customs of the local Tibetan communities are woven through the valley, so that a visit to Jiuzhaigou is also an encounter with the traditions of the eastern Tibetan world. The combination of alpine scenery, extraordinary water, and Tibetan culture gives the valley a quality found nowhere else, and it is this layering of nature and culture that earned the site its World Heritage status.

Jiuzhaigou is best visited as a full-day excursion, with park shuttle buses carrying visitors along the three branches and dropping them at the main viewpoints and trailheads. Autumn is the most spectacular season, when the forests turn brilliant and the lakes glow against the colors, though summer offers lush greenery and full waterfalls, and winter a stark, snowy beauty.
