The Fuliang Old County Yamen is a remarkably complete Qing dynasty county government complex located north of Jingdezhen, and one of the best-preserved administrative buildings of its kind in southern China. Certified as a national 4A-level attraction, it preserves the halls, offices, gates, and outbuildings from which the Fuliang county magistrate once governed this prosperous corner of the "Porcelain Capital" region, and it offers a rare, vivid glimpse into how local government actually worked in imperial China.
A yamen was the compound from which an imperial magistrate ran his county, combining courtrooms, offices, residential quarters, prison cells, and ceremonial halls within a single walled enclosure. At Fuliang, visitors can walk through this complete suite of buildings, from the great entrance gate through the courtroom where cases were heard, to the private quarters where the magistrate and his family lived, and the side halls where clerks and runners carried out the daily work of the administration. The architecture and layout reflect both the authority and the hierarchy of the Qing bureaucracy.
The Fuliang yamen is also notable for its rank. Because Fuliang was a wealthy county, enriched by the porcelain and tea trades of the Jingdezhen region, its magistrate held the unusually high rank of fifth grade, higher than most county officials, and the scale and refinement of the buildings reflect that status. To help bring the site to life, the complex stages reenactments of historical court cases, in which performers in period costume recreate the dramatic scenes of a Qing-era trial, much like the courtroom dramas of Chinese historical television.
The Fuliang Old County Yamen is best visited as a half-day trip from Jingdezhen, and it makes an interesting contrast to the porcelain-focused sights of the city, revealing the administrative and civic world that surrounded and supported the great ceramic industry. Allow an hour or two to explore the buildings and watch a performance. For travelers interested in imperial Chinese government, Qing architecture, or the broader history of the Jingdezhen region, it is one of the most distinctive and well-preserved stops in the area.

The Fuliang yamen was first built in the Tang dynasty, with surviving structures of Qing-dynasty form; it is the only fairly complete Qing county office in the Jiangnan region, known as the 'foremost yamen south of the Yangtze' and one of the few ancient county offices left in China. Historically Changnan (Jingdezhen) was long governed under Fuliang County, which was both a porcelain entrepôt and a major tea district since the Tang—the very 'going last month to Fuliang to buy tea' of Bai Juyi's poem. The yamen keeps its main gate, ceremonial gate and three halls, presenting the complete spatial order of ancient county administration.
Visita: Passing through the main and ceremonial gates to the great hall, with its plaques, magistrate's desk and couplets intact, you can picture the county magistrate holding court and overseeing porcelain and tea taxes. Seen together with Jingdezhen's kilns, the Fuliang yamen makes clear that the porcelain capital's prosperity rested on a framework of administration and tea governance—an important stop for understanding the region's history.
