The General's Government Office of Suiyuan City is a historic administrative compound in the newer part of Hohhot, preserving the seat of the Qing dynasty military governor who once commanded the garrison and frontier affairs of the Suiyuan region, the historical name for the area around present-day Hohhot. The complex stands as a tangible reminder of the Qing state's efforts to organize and defend its Inner Asian frontier through a network of garrison towns and military commands.

During the Qing dynasty, Hohhot existed in two distinct parts, the older commercial and monastic city to the south and the newer, walled garrison city of Suiyuan to the northeast, and the General's Office functioned as the administrative heart of the latter. The surviving buildings reflect the formal, hierarchical layout of a Qing official compound, with sequence of gates, halls, and courtyards arranged along a central axis and side chambers given over to the various functions of the command bureaucracy.
