Monte Qingcheng

Mount Qingcheng is one of the most sacred mountains in Chinese Taoism and one of the two components, together with the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as Mount Qingcheng and the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. Long praised in the saying "Qingcheng is the most serene mountain under heaven," it rises southwest of Dujiangyan city under a mantle of dense green forest, with mist clinging to the ridges through much of the year. For foreign visitors, it offers two distinct experiences in a single destination: a Front Mountain rich in Taoist culture, ancient temples, and pavilions, and a Back Mountain prized for hiking, waterfalls, and quiet nature.

The Front Mountain is what most visitors mean when they say "Mount Qingcheng." This is where the Taoist heritage runs deepest, tracing back to the late Han dynasty, when Zhang Daoling, the founder of Celestial Masters Taoism, is said to have established his teaching here. The slopes are dotted with temples, shrines, and hermitages, including Jianfu Palace at the base, Tianshi Cave partway up the mountain, and Shangqing Palace near the summit. Many of the structures are centuries old, with dark wood, upturned eaves, and incense smoke curling among the cypress trees. A cable car is available for those who prefer not to climb the full stone stairway, but walking the path is the classic experience, allowing the famous serenity of the mountain to settle in with every step.

The mountain's atmosphere changes with the weather and the season. Mornings are often misty and cool, with the forest canopy filtering the light into soft green; afternoons bring more visitors and a livelier pace on the main trails. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for hiking, while summer offers welcome relief from the heat of the Chengdu plain. Allow a half day for the Front Mountain alone, and a full day if you also want to add the Back Mountain.

Mount Qingcheng fits easily into a Dujiangyan itinerary alongside the Irrigation System, and the two together form one of the most rewarding day trips from Chengdu. Public transport connects Dujiangyan city to the Front Mountain entrance, and there are usually shared vehicles and tour buses linking the major sites of the region.
