Templo Yongan

Yongan Temple (Yongansi) is a historic Buddhist temple in Hunyuan County, south of Datong, recognized as a national-level protected cultural heritage site since 2005 and one of the most rewarding off-the-beaten-path temples in the region. Its profile rose further in recent years when it was identified as one of the real-world locations that inspired the video game Black Myth: Wukong, bringing a new wave of visitors to a site that had long been known primarily to architectural historians and serious temple enthusiasts.

The temple was founded during the Jin dynasty — the twelfth century — destroyed by fire, and rebuilt multiple times under the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. What survives today is therefore a layered complex, with the main hall preserving important elements from the Yuan period and later structures reflecting subsequent renovations. A plaque beneath the eaves of the main hall, attributed to the early-Yuan dynasty monk Xuean, is one of the temple's signature cultural artifacts and an important piece of medieval Chinese calligraphy.

The single greatest treasure inside the temple is the set of Yuan-dynasty shuilu (water-land) murals in the main hall. Shuilu paintings are a distinctive genre of Buddhist art designed for the "water-land retreat" ritual, in which offerings are made to all sentient beings of the six realms — including the living, the dead, gods, ghosts, and animals. The Yongan Temple murals, with their dense and colorful assemblies of Buddhas, bodhisattvas, deities, demons, and human figures, are one of the most complete surviving examples of this tradition in north China and reward close attention.

For travelers, Yongan Temple is best visited as part of a day trip to the wider Hunyuan area, paired with the nearby Hanging Temple, the Yuanjue Temple Brick Pagoda, and the old town of Hunyuan itself. The temple is quieter than the headline Datong sites, which makes it particularly appealing to visitors who want a more contemplative experience. A local guide enhances the visit, since the significance of the murals and the calligraphy is best understood with context. Visitors should respect the fragile artwork and refrain from touching the wall surfaces or using flash photography.
