Torre del Tambor

The Datong Drum Tower (Gulou) is a handsome three-story wooden tower at the heart of the Datong Ancient City, marking the traditional commercial and civic center of the historic core. First built in the Ming dynasty and rebuilt under the Qing — with significant restorations in the Shunzhi and Qianlong reigns — it ranks among the best-preserved and largest late-imperial drum towers in northern China. For travelers navigating the lanes of the old city, the tower serves as both an essential landmark and a worthwhile stop in its own right.

The drum tower's historical function was both practical and symbolic. Like its counterparts in Beijing, Xi'an, and other major Chinese cities, the Datong tower housed a great drum that was beaten at dusk to mark the closing of the city gates and the start of the night-watch, with a corresponding bell rung at dawn. The towers also served as points of civic assembly, announcement, and emergency alarm, and their central placement within the street grid reflected their role in the daily rhythms of urban life.

The tower is particularly photogenic in the evening, when the warm light of the setting sun catches the wooden eaves, and again after dark, when the tower is illuminated and the surrounding lanes fill with strollers.
