Tres puentes naturales de Wulong

The Wulong Three Natural Bridges (Tiansheng Sanqiao) are one of the most spectacular geological sites in China and a highlight of the Wulong Karst, inscribed by UNESCO as part of the South China Karst World Heritage. Located in Wulong County, a few hours east of downtown Chongqing, the site comprises three immense natural limestone arches — Qinglong, Tianlong, and Heilong — that span a deep, forested gorge, creating a sequence of colossal stone doorways through which visitors descend into the heart of the karst.

The scale is genuinely staggering. Each of the three bridges spans over a hundred meters and rises more than two hundred meters above the canyon floor, among the largest natural arches in Asia. Walking down the switchbacking stone steps from the rim, visitors pass under each bridge in turn, dwarfed by the towering walls and giant collapsed boulders that have become jungled islands of green moss and hanging ferns. The path also leads past a restored courtyard house tucked under one of the arches — a filming location for Zhang Yimou's Curse of the Golden Flower and, more famously, for Transformers: Age of Extinction, which placed an alien vista squarely inside this otherworldly canyon.

Beyond the cinematic fame, the site is a textbook showcase of how water and time carve limestone landscapes. Interpretive signs explain how the bridges formed over hundreds of thousands of years as underground rivers collapsed their own roofs, leaving the surviving rock arches behind. The local ecosystems — cliff-loving plants, cave-dwelling bats, ferns and orchids clinging to the walls — are as ecologically rich as the geology is dramatic.

Most visitors arrive at the Wulong tourist center in Xiannüshan Town, then transfer via the scenic area's electric shuttle to the entrance. Allow two to three hours for the descent and the boardwalk loop, and come prepared for stairs and humidity. Pairing the Three Natural Bridges with the nearby Longshuixia Fissure Gorge makes for a full day of Wulong karst exploration, and many travelers add Fairy Mountain for alpine contrast on a two-day loop.
