Geoparque nacional del valle de las marmitas extrañas de Qinglan

Qinglan Gujiu Valley National Geopark preserves one of the more unusual geological landscapes in eastern Guangdong and makes a worthwhile day trip from the historic core of Chaozhou. Recognized as a national-level geopark for its rare ancient geological traces, the valley is best known for the Qinglan potholes — bulbous, smooth-walled basins carved into the bedrock that Chinese geologists classify as glacial potholes from a much older cold period. Locally the formation is counted among the new eight sights of Chaozhou.

The park is organized around three related geological spectacles: the giant potholes themselves, a network of eroded caves and underground stream passages, and a forest of strange sculpted rock formations. Waterfalls cascade between the levels, and wooden boardwalks carry visitors across the lower gorge so you can look down into the cylindrical basins without damaging them. The combination of vertical cliffs, dripping moss, and weirdly rounded granite gives the place a distinctly otherworldly feel.

Beyond the geology, the valley is a pleasant subtropical forest walk. The loop trail passes through bamboo grove and secondary broadleaf forest, and on a weekday morning you may have most of the path to yourself. Qinglan also gained a flicker of pop-culture recognition as a filming location for a Chinese comedy, which has modestly increased domestic visitors but has not yet made it onto most international itineraries.

The geopark is a good option for travelers who have already spent a day or two in Chaozhou Ancient City and Guangji Bridge and want to get out into the surrounding landscape. It pairs well with an interest in natural history, photography, or simply a half-day escape from the urban density of the old town. As a complement to the cultural and culinary draw of Chaozhou, Qinglan Gujiu Valley offers a quiet, scenic counterpoint rooted in deep geological time.
