Nanshan Bamboo Sea, part of the Tianmu Lake scenic area on the border of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui provinces, is one of the largest and most atmospheric bamboo forests in eastern China. Covering tens of thousands of mu of continuous green bamboo, this 5A-rated national scenic area spreads across rolling hills outside the city of Liyang, administratively part of greater Changzhou. Long celebrated as a "longevity town" and a natural oxygen bar, it is a favorite escape from the dense cities of the Yangtze Delta, offering cool, quiet, and exceptionally clean air.

Walking routes wind through dense groves of moso bamboo, with boardwalks and stone paths leading up the slopes to viewpoints, quiet pavilions, and small streams. A cable car climbs to a ridge-top observation deck where the sea of bamboo stretches to the horizon, swaying in the wind, and on clear days you can see the layered hills fading toward neighboring provinces. Along the way you will pass traditional bamboo craft displays, small tea houses, and occasional wildlife, including the region's famous giant salamanders in protected enclosures. The whole environment feels far removed from urban China, and even on busier weekends the deeper trails stay surprisingly peaceful.

The Bamboo Sea is best visited as part of a half-day or full-day trip combined with nearby Tianmu Lake, and many travelers pair it with the Yushui Hot Spring located within the same scenic zone for a relaxed afternoon soak. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, when temperatures are mild and the bamboo is at its greenest; summer is a popular time to escape the heat thanks to the natural shade, while winter brings a stark, quiet beauty. Sturdy shoes are recommended, as the trails include stairs and uneven stone sections.

Nanshan Bamboo Sea is the natural counterpoint to Changzhou's urban attractions, and together with Tianmu Lake it forms the city's most rewarding nature itinerary.
