Parque Jingshan

Jingshan Park is a beautiful hilltop park directly north of the Forbidden City, offering what is arguably the finest view in all of Beijing. Built around an artificial hill created from earth excavated for the palace moats, the park sits precisely on the city's historic central axis, and climbing it rewards you with a sweeping panorama over the golden roofs of the Forbidden City stretching away to the south. For anyone visiting the palace, it is the perfect complement and a photographer's favorite.

The hill is crowned by a series of pavilions, the central one housing a Buddha figure and marking the highest point of the old city. From here the full grandeur of the imperial layout becomes clear in a way that is impossible from inside the palace itself, with the axis running north to south through the heart of Beijing and the modern skyline rising in the distance. Lower down, the park is a pleasant classical garden of peony beds, old trees, and quiet corners, and it carries a note of history as the place associated with the last Ming emperor's final days.

The climb to the top is short but steep, taking only a few minutes at an easy pace, and most visitors spend an hour or so here enjoying the views and the gardens. Late afternoon and sunset are especially magical, when the light turns golden over the palace roofs, though this is also when the summit viewpoint is most crowded. Mornings are quieter and often clearer, and spring brings colorful blossoms to the park. It is a compact, easygoing visit suitable for all ages.

Jingshan Park works best paired directly with the Forbidden City, since its northern exit faces the park's entrance; many visitors finish their palace tour and walk straight across to climb the hill for that unforgettable overview. From here you are also within easy reach of Beihai Park and the old hutong lanes to the west, making a natural walking route through the historic core. Modestly priced and quick to see, Jingshan offers one of the best-value and most memorable viewpoints on any Beijing itinerary.
