Hui'an Women's Costume

The Hui'an women's costume is worn in the fishing villages of eastern coastal Hui'an, a dress that took shape through the women's long labour by the sea.

It pairs a short, midriff-baring top with wide black trousers, a flowered headscarf and a bamboo hat, popularly summed up as 'feudal head, liberated belly', balancing practicality with beauty.

Striking yet harmonious in colour and form, it embodies the life and aesthetics of Hui'an's coastal fishing families, entering the first national ICH list in 2006.

Hui'an women can still be seen wearing this traditional dress in the coastal villages around Chongwu.
