Ursprung

Liuqiang is a local opera that arose in the Jimo area of Qingdao, evolved from local folk tunes; sharing roots with Maoqiang but distinct in style, it has a strong rural flavour and is popular mainly around Qingdao.

Its singing is lilting and unaffected with a dialect colour and free, flexible phrasing; the performance stays close to everyday life, with repertoires drawn from folk tales and domestic dramas much loved by local audiences.

Liuqiang is a national-level item of intangible cultural heritage and a distinctive local opera of the Jimo area of Qingdao, carrying the region's language, customs and operatic tradition with marked local cultural value.

It can be enjoyed at local opera performances, temple fairs and folk events in Jimo and around Qingdao, with local troupes and cultural venues responsible for its transmission and showcasing.
