Jiayuguan Bawangbian (Overlord-Whip Dance)

Bawangbian is a folk shehuo form current in the Jiayuguan region, named for the "overlord whip" wielded by its performers, and kin to the Hexi Corridor's long heritage of frontier garrisons and martial valour. It was inscribed on the fifth Gansu provincial ICH list in December 2024.

Performers wield a bamboo or wood overlord whip hung at both ends with coins or rings, striking it against shoulders, back, elbows and knees in rhythmic, ringing beats; the movement fuses martial forms with dance rhythm, vigorous and bold, uniting martial art, dance and fitness.

Jiayuguan's bawangbian carries the martial tradition of the Hexi frontier and the art of folk shehuo, an important sample for studying northwest military folklore and the evolution of folk dance, and a festival force that binds the community together.
