Fuzhou Shadow Play

Fuzhou shadow play is the southern-Liaoning shadow theatre of the Fuzhou area of Wafangdian in Dalian, introduced to Liaodong with migrants in the Ming dynasty and widely performed in Fuzhou's towns and villages by the Qing; put forward as a Dalian representative item to the provincial list in 2005, it later entered the national ICH register under traditional drama.

Its performance uses donkey-hide figures projected by lamplight behind a white screen, with performers working the figures while singing and playing; the singing blends southern-Liaoning folk tunes with northeastern shadow opera melodies, and the repertoire draws on historical romances and myths.

Fuzhou shadow play represents the folk theatre of southern Liaoning, carrying the culture of northeastern migrants and folk aesthetics, valuable for the study of how shadow play spread and localised in Liaodong.
