Rehe Errentai took shape in the late Qing period, influenced by Mongolian, Manchu folk music and Han folk tunes, sung in the local Rehe dialect; it is a product of the blending of Mongolian and Han cultures.

Usually performed by one male and one female actor using singing, movement, speaking and acrobatics as primary modes of expression; the content mostly consists of small-scale song-and-dance plays reflecting folk life and love stories.
