Changsha Flower-Drum Opera

Changsha flower-drum opera took shape in the Qing dynasty and spread through central and eastern Hunan and the shores of Dongting Lake, growing out of folk song-and-dance and ground flower-drum performance; it is the most influential branch of Hunan flower-drum theatre. It entered the third national ICH list in 2011.

Its performances are lively and humorous, rich in everyday life, built on local tune families and small ditties, telling stories of ordinary townsfolk and family life with warm, witty dialect speech.

Changsha flower-drum opera represents Hunan folk theatre, carrying the region's rural culture and dialect art, and remains widely beloved among the people.
