Moon Hill is one of the most distinctive natural landmarks in the Yangshuo region, a karst pinnacle whose summit is pierced by a near-circular arch through which the sky is visible, creating the impression of a moon suspended in the hillside. Sitting at the southern end of the Ten-Mile Gallery route, it is one of the most photographed sights in southern China and a regular stop on almost every Yangshuo itinerary.

The arch is the result of karst erosion acting on a limestone peak over millions of years. Water has gradually enlarged a natural fracture in the rock until a section of the summit has worn through, leaving a crescent-shaped opening whose apparent shape shifts as you walk around the base of the hill. From one angle the opening looks like a full moon, from another a waxing crescent, and from a third a thin sliver of light, which is part of what gives the hill its name and its appeal.

A well-marked stone path climbs from the roadside parking area to the base of the arch, with viewing terraces at intervals along the way that frame different perspectives on the opening. The walk to the top takes most visitors about thirty to forty minutes, with stone steps that are steep in places but well maintained. From the upper terraces, the view opens out across the surrounding karst valleys and the rice paddies of the Ten-Mile Gallery, with ranks of limestone pinnacles marching off toward the horizon. For fit travelers, the climb to the arch itself is the most rewarding single viewpoint in this part of Yangshuo.

For international visitors, Moon Hill is best planned as the anchor of a half-day or full-day loop along the Ten-Mile Gallery. Pair a morning cycle past the Big Banyan Tree and the Butterfly Spring with a late-morning climb of Moon Hill, finishing with lunch at one of the cafes that line the road below. Photographers will want to time their visit for the late afternoon light, when the arch catches the warm tones of the setting sun and the surrounding peaks glow in the low angle.

Moon Hill sits within the Guilin Karst, a component of the South China Karst UNESCO World Heritage serial property, and it is one of the most accessible single illustrations of the geological processes that created the entire Yangshuo landscape. For visitors who want to see karst architecture up close rather than from a distance, the climb to the arch is one of the best short hikes in the region, with a payoff that more than justifies the effort.
