Drei-Reiche- & Water-Margin-Filmstudio (Wuxi)

The Three Kingdoms and Water Margin Scenic Area is a 5A-rated historical film and television base on the southern shore of Tai Lake, part of the broader CCTV Wuxi Film and Television Base established in 1987. It was built specifically to stage large-scale productions of two of China's Four Great Classical Novels, "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" and "Water Margin," and it remains one of the earliest purpose-built film-themed tourist attractions in China, combining working soundstages with a public-facing cultural park.

Within the site, the area is divided into themed zones that recreate the architectural and urban settings of the eras depicted in the novels. The Three Kingdoms section is built around a recreated imperial palace, city walls, and military compounds that evoke the late Eastern Han dynasty and the wars that followed, while the Water Margin section recreates the riverside town of Liangshan and the world of the outlaw heroes at the heart of the novel. Streets are lined with period-style buildings dressed as taverns, barracks, residences, and market stalls, and the layouts are designed both for filming and for visitors to wander through.

Live performances are the real signature of the experience. Throughout the day, the park stages large-scale choreographed shows built around battles, horseback riding, acrobatics, and stunt work, often drawing on the most famous scenes from the two novels. These performances, with their cavalry charges, staged duels, and bursts of pyrotechnics, give the park much of its energy and are typically what visitors remember most, especially families with children, who respond strongly to the scale and spectacle of the shows.

A visit generally takes a half day to most of a day, depending on how many performances visitors want to catch, and timing the route around the show schedule is essential to get the most out of the experience. Because the scenic area shares a site with the broader CCTV Wuxi Film and Television Base, it pairs naturally with the neighboring Three Kingdoms City and other film-set zones on the same Tai Lake shoreline, making it a good cultural counterpoint to the lakeside and Buddhist attractions elsewhere around Wuxi.
