Nanxi-Fluss Landschaftsgebiet

The Nanxi River is the gentle, green heart of the Yongjia hills north of Wenzhou, winding for well over a hundred kilometers through one of the most idyllic rural landscapes in southern Zhejiang. As a 4A-rated scenic area, it brings together clean jade water, dramatic rock formations, bamboo groves, and some of the best-preserved old lineage villages in the region. For travelers who want to slow down and experience a quieter, more poetic side of Wenzhou, this is one of the most rewarding destinations in the area.

Unlike a single mountain or single lake, the scenic area spreads across eight sub-zones along the river, each offering a different mood. The middle reaches around Yantou serve as the natural base for most visitors, with easy access to the famous Lion Rock, the riverside Lishui Old Street, and the historic Furong and Cangpo ancient villages. Walking or cycling between these settlements takes you through rice paddies, lotus ponds, and ancestral halls, with old academies and lineage temples at nearly every turn. Farther afield, the Daruoyan area hides cliffside walks and small waterfalls, while the northern reaches are prized by photographers for their tiered rice terraces.

A signature experience of the Nanxi River is the bamboo-raft drift, a slow float downstream on a traditional raft that lets you take in the cliffs, farmland, and villages from the water. Several piers along the river offer drifting routes of varying lengths, and watching local boatmen pole the rafts with long bamboo poles is one of the iconic images of the region. Combine the raft trip with a wander through one of the old villages and a simple farm meal at a riverside restaurant for a perfect easygoing day.

Because the scenic area is so large and the sights scattered, a private car or at least a few days of local buses make exploring much easier. Allow two or three days to do the river and villages justice, and try to visit in spring or early summer, when the water is clear and the fields glow green. Whether you come for hiking, photography, river drifting, or simply to slow down among old stone houses, the Nanxi River offers some of the most authentic rural scenery in the Wenzhou region.
