Yuquan-Landschaftsgebiet (Jadequellen-Tempel)

The Yuquan Scenic Area, sometimes known as Yuquan Temple or the "Jade Spring" Daoist complex, is a 4A-rated religious and landscape site set in the hills just above the Tianshui urban core. Combining Daoist architecture with mountain scenery, it is one of the quieter, more contemplative stops on a Tianshui itinerary and a useful contrast to the city's Buddhist grottoes.

The site takes its name from a perennial spring said to have produced water clear enough to be called "jade." That spring anchors a sequence of terraced courtyards, halls, and gateways built into the slope, with old cypresses and stone stairways creating the atmosphere of a working Daoist mountain temple. Inscriptions and stele scattered through the compound record the temple's long connection to local literati and visiting monks.

Architecturally, the complex shows the understated northern Chinese Daoist style: deep-eaved timber halls, red lacquer columns, grey-tile roofs, and intricate ceiling brackets painted in mineral pigments. The vertical layout, with halls rising from a lower gate to an upper sanctuary, makes the approach itself part of the ritual experience. Short detours lead to viewpoints over the Tianshui basin.

For foreign visitors, Yuquan offers an easy half-day trip from the city center, and its modest crowds make it well suited to slow exploration. Comfortable shoes help on the stone steps, and early mornings are the best time to see resident clergy at their daily practice. Pair the visit with the nearby Fuxi Temple and the Tianshui Museum for a fuller picture of how Daoism, mythology, and local history intersect in this part of Gansu.
