Über Generalgouverneursamt der drei Nordostprovinzen (Residenz von Zhang Xueliang)

The Viceroy's Office of the Three Northeast Provinces is one of the most historically loaded buildings in Shenyang, a late-Qing and early-Republican administrative complex that stood at the political centre of northeast China during one of its most turbulent eras. The compound is now a provincially protected cultural-heritage site and operates as a museum open to the public.

Founded as the seat of the Viceroy of the Three Northeast Provinces — the Qing dynasty's senior military and civilian official for Manchuria — the office was, after the Imperial Palace itself, the most important government building in Shenyang. It was from here that the late-Qing administration managed the opening of Manchuria to railway development, foreign relations with Russia and Japan, and the eventual collapse of imperial authority in the region.

The office later became the official residence of Zhang Xueliang, the Northeastern warlord whose role in the 1936 Xi'an Incident altered the course of modern Chinese history. The compound's layered history is reflected in its architecture, which mixes late-Qing official layout with Republican-era façades and twentieth-century modifications.

As a museum, the site presents this history across a series of restored halls. Exhibition panels, period furnishings, photographs, and bilingual signage cover the office's successive occupants, the development of modern Shenyang, and the wider political story of northeast China through the fall of the Qing, the warlord era, the Japanese occupation, and the founding of the People's Republic.

The compound sits inside the historic Fangcheng district, within a short walk of the Shenyang Imperial Palace, Marshal Zhang's Mansion, and the former Frontier Industry Bank. For visitors interested in the late-Qing to early-Republican chapter of Chinese history, it is a compact and rewarding stop on a walking itinerary of the area.
