Residenz der Kong-Familie

The Kong Family Mansion stands immediately east of the Temple of Confucius in Qufu and is the second of the Three Confucian Sites inscribed together by UNESCO in 1994. Where the Temple honors Confucius as a teacher and a sage, the Mansion is where his descendants actually lived — the residential and administrative seat of the Kong lineage from the Song dynasty onward, occupied continuously until the early twentieth century. For a foreign visitor, it complements the Temple by turning the focus from philosophy to the human story of the family that carried his name.

The complex is the largest noble mansion preserved in China after the imperial palaces themselves. Built across more than four hundred halls, courtyards, and outbuildings, it follows a unique combined layout: the front portion functioned as the hereditary Duke's government office, where the senior descendant of Confucius administered the estate and received officials, while the rear portion was the private residence of the family — a palace and household in one. This blending of an official yamen with a noble residence is rare in surviving Chinese architecture and is one of the main reasons UNESCO cited the property.

Inside, the reception halls are furnished as they would have been for the late-Qing and early-Republican dukes, with inscribed plaques from visiting emperors — the Qianlong emperor was a frequent guest — hanging above the thrones. The inner residential quarters, the family school, the gardens, and the dark, brick-lined rear storeroom where the most precious Kong heirlooms were once kept (many are now at the Confucius Museum) give a vivid sense of how a single aristocratic house lived at the apex of late-imperial Chinese society for century after century.

The Mansion is reached directly from the Temple's east gate by a short lane of souvenir stalls. Plan one to two hours. The combination of the two sites, with the Cemetery to the north, is the standard Three Confucian Sites route. English signage has improved steadily in recent years, and a translation app will handle most room labels and plaque texts.
