Über Qiantong-Altstadt
Qiantong Ancient Town is a quiet, traditional water-town settlement in the hills southwest of Ningbo, in Ninghai county, known for its well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty houses and the small canals that run along its lanes. Less commercial and less visited than the famous water towns of the lower Yangtze, it offers a more authentic and atmospheric glimpse of rural eastern China. The town gained wider recognition as the setting for a well-known Chinese film, and it remains a favorite of photographers and slow travelers.
The layout of Qiantong is one of its most distinctive features. A network of small canals, fed by a mountain stream, runs alongside the streets and through the village, with stone bridges crossing the water at every turn. Houses are arranged along a careful clan-based plan dating back to the Song dynasty, when the Tong family first settled here, and the result is a tight, organic streetscape of grey-tiled roofs, white walls, carved wooden doors, and stone-paved alleys. A climb up the nearby slope gives a beautiful overview of the whole settlement nestling in its valley.
Because Qiantong has been less heavily restored for tourism than the headline water towns, it keeps a genuinely lived-in feel. Local residents still wash vegetables in the canals, dry grain and laundry in the lanes, and go about their daily routines amid the old houses. There are small ancestral halls, shrines, and family courtyards to visit, along with traditional workshops producing tofu, rice cakes, and local crafts, and the relative absence of souvenir chains gives the place a calm and unhurried atmosphere.
Qiantong is a full-day destination from central Ningbo, since it sits well out in the Ninghai hills, and it is best paired with other sights in the southwest of the prefecture. Allow several hours to walk the lanes, climb to the viewpoints, and enjoy a simple local meal. Spring and autumn are the loveliest seasons, with blossoms and comfortable walking weather. For travelers who have seen the famous water towns and want a quieter, more genuine version of the same experience, Qiantong is one of the most rewarding side trips in the greater Ningbo region.
