Über Song-Kaiserstraße (Songdu Yujie)

The Song Capital Imperial Street (Songdu Yu Jie) is a reconstructed commercial avenue on the north-south axis of old Kaifeng, designed to evoke the appearance of the great ceremonial street that once led through the heart of the Northern Song capital. Opened in 1988, the avenue is one of Kaifeng's earlier attempts to present its Song heritage in built form, and it remains one of the clearest demonstrations of how the modern city has chosen to frame its imperial past for visitors.

Historical records describe the original Imperial Street as the most important thoroughfare of Song Bianliang. It ran along the capital's central axis, beginning at the Xuande Gate of the imperial palace and extending south through the Inner City's Zhuque Gate all the way to the Nanxun Gate of the Outer City, a distance of several kilometres. It was the road used by the emperor for ancestral rites, for the great southern suburban ceremonies, and for formal processions leaving or returning to the palace, which is why it was designated "imperial". The modern rebuilding follows that documented alignment and draws on Song architectural sources for the design of the streetscape.

Today the avenue functions as both a tourist attraction and a working commercial street. The buildings along it are in the Song style, with timber-framed façades, tiled roofs, and lantern-hung signboards, and they house shops, restaurants, teahouses, and small museums devoted to Kaifeng crafts. Street-level activity, rather than the architecture alone, gives the avenue its atmosphere: vendors, street performers, and seasonal decorations keep the space animated throughout the year, particularly during the major Chinese holidays.

For international visitors, the Imperial Street is best understood as an interpretive overlay on the historic axis of Kaifeng rather than as a literal survival. It provides a walkable connection between several of the city's key monuments, including Longting and the old city wall, and it is best visited as part of a longer walking route through the central district rather than as a destination in itself. Allow an hour for a relaxed stroll, with stops for tea or snacks.
