Saishang Altstraße

Saishang Old Street, whose name translates roughly as the Old Street Beyond the Frontier, is a historic pedestrian lane running close to Dazhao Temple in the old southern quarter of Hohhot, preserving and re-creating the architectural character of the Ming and Qing dynasty commercial streets that once served the monastery and its surrounding neighborhood. The street has been substantially restored in recent years as part of a broader effort to highlight Hohhot's history as a cultural crossroads on the edge of the Mongolian steppe.

Walking along the lane, visitors pass between buildings finished in the traditional styles of the region, with carved wooden shopfronts, grey tile roofs, upturned eaves, and the occasional ornamental gate or archway marking key points along the route.
