Über Datong Stadtmauer
The Datong Ancient City Wall is one of the most imposing military fortifications in northern China, a massive brick-faced earth rampart that encloses the historic core of the city and ranks among the most ambitious Ming-dynasty defensive structures ever built. Originally constructed in 1372 — the fifth year of the Hongwu reign — by the general Xu Da on foundations dating back through the Han, Wei, Tang, Liao, and Yuan dynasties, the wall has become one of the signature landmarks of modern Datong and the centerpiece of the city's early-twenty-first-century old-town revitalization.
The scale is genuinely impressive. The perimeter extends for more than seven kilometers, enclosing an area of roughly three and a third square kilometers, with walls fourteen meters high and twelve to eighteen meters thick. The construction is a textbook of late-imperial Chinese military engineering: a rubble-and-earth core faced with stone foundations and gray brick, topped by crenellated parapets and studded with watchtowers, corner towers, gatehouses, and barbicans. Four great gates — Heyang to the east, Yongtai to the south, Qingyuan to the west, and Wuding to the north — anchor the cardinal points of the circuit.
The most distinctive feature of the Datong wall is its external profile. The wall's outward face is broken by a series of protruding rectangular bastions, giving the silhouette a distinctive sawtooth or "gear-like" appearance when seen from above. This design allowed defenders to deliver flanking fire along the face of the wall, and it is a hallmark of Datong's fortification that is rarely seen at this scale elsewhere in China. At each corner, grand corner towers rise above the parapet, with the octagonal northwest "Qian Tower" being the most celebrated.
Today the restored wall can be walked or cycled in a full circuit, with wide paved surfaces on top and views down into the old-city lanes and out toward the modern skyline. Evening illumination transforms the wall into one of the great visual spectacles of Datong. For travelers, a sunset walk on the wall is one of the most rewarding free experiences in the city, and a perfect way to orient oneself before exploring the temples, lanes, and markets within.
